Module Progress Documentation
For this module, we were to create and design a concept for a revamp of an existing game, or an entirely new one. We started out this module by doing some game research on the games that we're interested in. Since I spent more than half of my previous sem break drowning in music rhythm games, I decide to look into them.
After that, we proceed to work on our Art Direction Proposal. As much as I love the concept and storyline of Deemo, I wanted to revamp it's concept to something more concrete, as well as to have the characters to portray their personalities better.
Art Direction Proposal
Project 1
After finalizing the art direction, I then proceed to do some sketches for the characters of what I had in mind. It started off with really bad composition of the sketches... especially now that I look again of what I had done.
After consultations with Mr Kannan, I proceed to work on better and more varieties of silhouettes for the characters. I had a really hard time thinking for them on my own. Pinterest and Google is a really amazing invention and tool it is. I tried to have the silhouette sketches to be able to resemble the characters' personality and vibe.
We were then to pick 5 out of the 10 silhouette sketches of each character to further work on it. For me, as I'm really clear for the direction for the character 'Deemo', instead of picking 5 silhouette sketches, I added more varieties with minor differences from one of them.
As for the environment, we were to work on the world concept and the world map for this part of the project. The borderline between 'world concept' and 'environment design' is so thin that it's really easy to get confused or lost between them. At first I wanted to have the world map from a bird eye view, but after doing it I realize a lot of the details will be gone as well as the aesthetics that I'm approaching.
From the consultation with Mr Kannan, I realize that my color choice is always very washed, and I need to intensify the shadows and highlights to the composition to show that there's a sense of depth in the composition, and to make every object more pop out. Below is the compilation for Project 1. The world concept is going to be further polish in the final stage as I'm really off schedule for my submissions :c
Project 2
Moving on to Project 2, we were to further refine our character and environment designs. We were also to work on their breakdowns. As I work along, I realize that the art direction I proposed at the start of the semester is really going to kill me, especially in the environment design part with time constraint as the cherry topping. Therefore, I shifted the art style to a more matte style. I never skip class on purpose before but this is my very first time in my whole student life to burn out to this. Below attached is the compilation for Project 2.
Final Project
For the final project, we were to compile what we did with the UI design of the game. Below is the final compilation.
FINALLY! I'm reaching the end of this post! At the start of the semester, I'm really confused as of what we're supposed to do. But seeing as I'm able to submit everything (even though I'm late) I can finally sleep in peace. This module is really fruitful for me, especially in terms of creating illustrations and designs for games. As what Mr Kannan keeps on highlighting when it's my turn to consult, we need to think about the functionality as well as the work load in the team. On the other hand, I'm quite disappointed that I didn't get to animate the characters via DragonBones, but I think I'll do it during the sem break to finish it!
